1.Conference Overview
CLEO Pacific Rim (CLEO-PR) Conference took place from 31st July – 4th August at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre Singapore. The conference was colocated with the OptoElectronics and Communications Conference(OECC) and Photonics Global Conference (PGC). I was too excited as this is the first time I participated CLEO conference. There were too many interesting talks in the same session which makes me confused sometimes where should I go. But the most that I interested was the ‘Women in Photonics’ session. It was vivacious and inspirational to hear a talk from women who had embark themselves in photonics field as a career. As the conference hall was located at the Marina Bay Sands and close to Garden by the Bay which was one of the attractions place in Singapore allows me to visit those places after the conference session. I also glad that all foods there were ‘Halal’ and I can eat without any suspicious.
2. Review of my presentation
I participated in a poster session. The half an hour session was really great for me as there were a lot of fruitful discussion from others researchers. It was a great opportunity for me. About 8 peoples interested with my topic. One of them is technical director of Huawei Technologies in German, Prof. Dr. Eng. Le Nguyen Binh. He was interested with the physics of the device and suggest me to include the physics of the resonance of the nanocavity in journal in future. Overall, I satisfied with my presentation and I enjoyed to learn others research as well.
3. Interesting research topic
Ultra-low Loss Silica Waveguide Ring Resonators for Resonant Micro-Optic Gyroscopes, Hulian Ma, Jianjie Zhang, Hanzhao Li, and Zhonghe Jin, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China.
Resonant micro-optic gyroscope1) (RMOG) with a waveguide-type ring resonator (WRR) has been identified for new optical gyros that can achieved size, cost and power reduction. The most critical element of RMOG is an ultra-low loss waveguide-type ring resonator (WRR) with centimetre-scale size. The presenter explained on the fabrication and measurements on both types of WRR. The configuration of WRR consists of transmissive WRR and reflective WRR. WRR was fabricated on silicon wafer using plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition. The finesse and resonant depth of reflective silica WRR are 196.7 and 98%, respectively. For the transmissive silica WRR, the finesse and the total loss are 128 and 0.113dB, respectively. The polarization error and polarization extinction ratio is increased by pigtailed the silica WRR with single polarization fiber. With high finesse and polarization possible to gain value of bias stability of 4m̊/s in one-hour timeframe. Also, from the rotation measurement showed that it can exceed the earth rotation rate.
1)Gyroscope is a device consist of a wheel or disc mounted so that it can spin rapidly about an axis which is itself free to alter in direction. The orientation of the axis is not effected by tilting of the mounting, so gyroscopes can be used to provide stability or maintain a reference direction.
