Dates: July 29~August 3, 2018

Venue: Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre

Outline

This year's CLEO Pacific Rim 2018 was held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, a large venue in Hong Kong. The program included performances by prominent researchers such as Kerry J. Vahala of California Institute of Technology and Dr. Noda of Kyoto University.

In most of the oral presentations, the classrooms for each session were basically full. Compared to the previous session on photonic crystals at the Japan Society of Applied Physics, I felt that there were not many questions after the presentations.

3. regarding his/her presentation

I gave an oral presentation on the performance improvement of photonic crystal type DeMUX fabricated by CMOS process. Dr. Noda of Kyoto University was in the audience, so I was able to successfully complete my presentation despite the tension.

During the Q&A session following the presentation, I was asked about the current losses at DeMUX. Once again, we realized that the losses are still large. In particular, the coupling loss between the waveguide and the photonic crystal is large, and improvement of this loss is essential if practicality is to be emphasized. The chairmen also asked questions such as "Is the device reproducible? and "Can this optimization method be applied to other wavelength bands? and "Can this optimization method be applied to other wavelength bands?

Overall, I was able to give my presentation in a calmer atmosphere than the session on photonic crystals at the Japan Society of Applied Physics, and I was able to respond to questions and answers without panic. It was a good experience for me to experience the level of the students of famous Asian universities at my first international conference.

4. introduction of research topics

W3A.156 Visible Frequency Comb in a Silica Microbubble Resonator

(Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University)

This year, Mr. Sho Kasumie from OIST was at CLEO-PR2018, and we were able to hear about his research in the limited time available.

In this study, a microbubble resonator (MBR) is used to generate a frequency comb, and the advantage of using an MBR is that the dispersion of the entire resonator can be tuned. The MBR actually fabricated has a thickness of 1.36 μm by 152 μm. The characteristic feature of this study is that the combs are generated in the wavelength band around 750~800 nm. The actual pump wavelength is 765 nm.
