Can you stop light? Why does shutting off light save energy?

<Tanabe Photonic Structures Lab.

Since light does not generate Joule heat when transmitted, it offers the ultimate in energy savings. However, there are many difficulties in realizing optical signal processing. One of them is memory, which cannot retain information without "stopping light.

The Tanabe Photonic Structures Laboratory develops light-stopping and light-containment technologies that will bring a breakthrough in optical signal processing research and realize ultra energy-efficient information processing.

Research Assistant

Undergraduate students in European and U.S. universities learn about university laboratories by working part-time as Research Assistants / Lab Assistants. In the Tanabe Laboratory for Photonic Structures, we have decided to recruit a part-time general research assistant from inside and outside of the university, so that motivated students can have such an opportunity.

Replacing conventional electrical signal processing with optical processing can achieve significant energy savings in signal processing, which was not possible before.
We are developing a small container that confines light, called a micro optical resonator to realize an optical LSI.
