About CLEO2022
The conference is organized by the American Physical Society (APS), the Optical Society (OSA), and the IEEE Photonics Society. 2021 was held online, but 2022 was a hybrid conference. The hybrid conference combines the advantages of both offline and online. I felt that the advantages of holding the conference online were in the points of being able to submit videos, make presentations online, and view them at a later date, while the advantages of holding the conference offline were in the overall atmosphere of the venue, such as the question-and-answer sessions. The conference itself proceeded smoothly, with the exception of a few microphone malfunctions in the online presentations. There was a wide space for sponsors, including Japanese companies and overseas corporations.

Title: Multi-Wavelength Reconstruction in a Compact (< mm) High - Resolution (< 0.1 nm) Random Photonic Crystal Spectrometer

We presented a monochromator using a photonic crystal waveguide with a chirped structure in which the waveguide width is gradually narrowed. photonic crystal waveguides fabricated in a CMOS compatible process have randomness and localized light leaks from the top. This localized light is very wavelength dependent, partly due to Anderson localization, and can be used for spectroscopy. As for the Q&A session, one question could not be answered, and the other question was a disappointment because I did not have the slides prepared to answer it, although I understood the intent. The person who asked the former question was a well-known person whom I had included in the slides of the previous study, so it was a great honor for me.

Tutorial presentation reviewing the modulators required for chip-scale transmitters with history. The bit rate is important, but the conversion power and insertion loss of the modulator are also important to prove energy savings. Also, the shape of the modulator needs to be optimized depending on whether it is all on one material or wire-bonded. The session was interesting because it described research that will be helpful in creating modulators in the future.

Title: Ultra-Compact Semiconductor/Solid-State Vertically Integrated Laser Over kW Peak Power

This is a study of a fully integrated chip-scale passively Q-switched laser that combines a semiconductor laser medium with a solid-state laser medium using quantum multiple wells. Conventional vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) have a small active region volume, and complex systems such as lenses are required to achieve high output power. In the present work, Yb:YAG and Cr:YAG are coupled inside the cavity to function as a Q-switch. The session was interesting because it was a post-deadline presentation, and there were a lot of people in the room even though it was late.
