The Japan Society of Applied Physics (Fall)

Autumn of Research
October is the peak month for research. It is the time to settle down and work on your research.

November

alumni association

Keio Photonics Society

Keio Photonics Society
We have a social gathering for optics-related laboratories. The Tanabe Lab. of the Department of Physics, the Hayase Lab. of the Department of Physics and Computer Science, the Terakawa Lab. of the Department of Electronics, and other labs get together to exchange ideas over pizza and drinks, poster presentations, and so on. Tanabe Lab. mainly presents a brief summary of the graduation research that the fourth-year undergraduates have been doing so far.

Interim presentation (Master)

Interim presentation (Master)
This is also the time when first-year master's students make their interim presentations, and the tension among master's students, including second-year master's students who are scheduled to make their presentations in December, increases in the laboratory.

KO Society

KO Society
Every year in November, the KO Kai, a meeting of alumni and friends of Keio University, is held. KO-kai is an acronym of Kannari-Obara, which stands for "Kannari-Obara" and is an alumni association that spans across laboratories from Fujioka Lab. to Kannari Lab. to Tanabe Lab. and from Fujioka Lab. to Obara Lab. to Terakawa Lab. The existence of such a strong alumni organization is one of the characteristics of our laboratory.

alumni association

alumni association
Tanabe Lab's OBOG meetings are often held around this time of the year, and are attended by alumni who are active members of society. If the KO meeting is described as a prestigious event, this alumni meeting aims to allow many alumni to gather and interact with current students in a relaxed atmosphere.

December

Catching up on research

exhibition

thesis statement
The first master's thesis presentation for second-year master's students will be held. This is a climax for the second-year master's students. The professors ask many tough questions.

Doctoral Hearings

Doctoral Hearings
It is also the time of the year when presentations (public hearings) are held for the completion of doctoral programs. D. students of the Tanabe Laboratory have always had prominent professors from abroad to participate in the examination. This is how we truly develop our abilities. On this occasion, a professor from Harvard University visited Japan.

Seminar

Seminar
It is also the time of the year when we have many visitors from overseas. This is a scene from a seminar held at Yagami Campus by a professor of Technical University of Munich, who visited as a sub-reviewer (review committee member) of Dr. Tanabe.

International Symposium

International Symposium
We sometimes host international symposiums during this period. We invite researchers from various countries to Keio to give cutting-edge lectures.

International Symposium

International Symposium
The advantage of holding the International Symposium in Yagami is that all students in our laboratory can have the opportunity to present their own research results. Discussions directly with top researchers will lead to new perspectives and discoveries.

International Symposium

International Symposium
Even third-year undergraduates can get involved in conversation at social gatherings.

year-end party

year-end party
Third-year students assigned to the laboratory will be invited. This is a chance to meet all the lab members at once. Surprise awards are given at the year-end party.

January

New Year

New Year's Prayer

New Year's Prayer
We go to Hiyoshi Shrine for Hatsumode (New Year's visit) to pray for safety in the year ahead. Some of the students are international students, so it is very interesting for them to experience Japanese culture. After the ceremony, we had a mochi (rice cake) pounding.

Laser Society

Laser Society
The Laser Conference is held at this time. Fourth-year undergraduate students whose research is progressing quickly may make their debut at a national conference here. The photo shows a presentation in a format called poster presentation.

February

graduation thesis presentation

graduation thesis presentation

graduation thesis presentation
The fourth-year undergraduates are finally ready to present their graduation theses. It is a nerve-wracking time for them, as professors and students from other laboratories have come to listen to their presentations (in the picture, it looks like there are a lot of empty seats, but in reality, professors and students are seated behind them). The students are at the peak of their fatigue as they are in the final stages of their research, but they will do their best to present the results of the past year's work.

International Conference

International Conference
The SPIE Photonics West conference, which includes one of the world's largest laser exhibitions, is held in San Francisco during this period. Although it coincides with the period of thesis and dissertation presentations, doctoral students and others will go to the conference to present their research results to the world.

winter training camp

winter training camp
Winter camp is 100% fun. Every year we go skiing in various places. Third-year students who have been assigned to a laboratory also participate, and deepen exchanges with seniors in the laboratory.

winter training camp

winter training camp
We'll ski until we're exhausted for the day!

winter training camp

I don't like to show you this kind of thing, but let me show you a little bit of it. A few students are exhausted and sleeping...!

International Symposium

International Symposium
It is rare to be able to attend live presentations by top researchers from overseas such as CALTECH, NIST, EPFL, KIT, and Seika University without having to leave Hiyoshi.

March

graduation ceremony

The Japan Society of Applied Physics (Spring)

The Japan Society of Applied Physics (Spring)
It is one of the most important domestic conferences, and is also the conference where fourth-year undergraduate students present their graduation research for the first time. Professor Tanabe's first presentation was at the Japan Society of Applied Physics. This is a gateway to success as a researcher. Students and professional researchers alike have no excuses, and domestic university professors and researchers from companies will give you harsh criticisms if you go to the conference.

The Japan Society of Applied Physics (Spring)
