CLEO-PR 2017 Participation Report

Outline
I attended CLEO-PR held in Singapore from July 31 to August 4. CLEO-PR is an abbreviation of CLEO Pacific Rim, a biennial conference held in the countries of the Pacific Rim region. The conference used to be held in odd-numbered years, the same as CLEO EU, but it will be shifted to even-numbered years starting from next year's conference in Hong Kong. I had the impression that the conference progress was packed in relation to the number of performances, with 16 sessions being held during the same time slot, and there were several times when I was not sure which session to attend. On the other hand, the number of attendees at each session was not large, except for some popular sessions, and I was able to relax in a more comfortable state compared to the packed hall at CLEO (although I felt lonely during my own presentation, as described later). Other reception aspects were well organized, such as the use of the Marina Bay Sands conference center, daily coffee break snacks and buffet lunches, and a reception at a nearby aquarium (which I did not attend but which was well received).
2. regarding his/her own presentation
I presented a talk on coupling of toroidal resonators and photonic crystal waveguides. The presentation was included in the session called "Frequenecy comb and waveguide devices", and only Xioxio who talked about Kerr comb in the invited session talked about frequency comb. Other than that, there were people from quite a wide range of fields, including optical signal processing, optical communications, and our presentation. The session was sparsely populated, probably due to the fact that it was early in the morning, and there were only a little over 15 people at my presentation. I was able to give my presentation without any confusion. However, I felt a little lonely because the only questions were about the planned accumulation from the chair (there were not many questions in general). I expected that there would be many people from other fields in the session, so I regretted a little that I should have given a more detailed introduction to the session and tried to make the audience more interested in the session.
3. Topic Introduction
3-2J-1: Optoelectronic Devices Based On Cavityintegrated 2D materials, Changhua Liu, Arka Majumdar
The presentation was given by a group at the University of Washington working on the integration of GaP photonic crystal resonators and 2D materials, and since it was an invited talk, it was a review of the work that has been done so far. The presentation basically focused on the luminescence enhancement of WSe2 due to the Purcell effect in photonic crystal resonators, but it also covered the general luminescence I have the impression that the evaluation of luminescence properties has been covered. As for second harmonic generation from WSe2, they are shifting from a silicon photonic crystal resonator-based platform to a silicon nitride photonic crystal resonator with high transparency at short wavelengths. I am interested in this field, so I would like to keep up with the developments.
